23.12.2015 | Elation Lighting for Circuit Grounds Stage at Electric Daisy Carnival Orlando

Since premiering as an unassuming rave back in 1997 in LA, the adult playground that is today’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) has spread across the U.S. and indeed the world. Orlando has hosted its own version since 2011 and LD Steve Lieberman has been lighting it ever since. This year, he designed a remarkable megastructure for the Circuit Grounds stage plus the accompanying lighting scheme that was just as impressive, teaming Elation Platinum Spot 35 Pro™ moving heads with Colour Chorus™ LED strip lights, among other Elation gear and other lighting. Production was by AG Production Services.

Produced by Insomniac Events, the fifth incarnation of EDC Orlando took place at Tinker Field on November 6th and 7th with three different stages hosting 50 DJs, among them headliners Tiesto, Kaskade and Calvin Harris. Cutting-edge production is a trademark of EDC events and EDC Orlando was no exception. The open steel megastructure of the Circuit Grounds with its magical arches and visually stunning stage area created an unparalleled visual experience.

The combination of Platinum Spot 35 Pro’s and Colour Chorus 72’s has been a popular choice on festivals this fall. At EDC Orlando, Lieberman used the feature-packed Platinum Spot 35 Pro as the primary profile fixture for the Circuit Grounds stage. “It has a great output and really clean optical system,” he said of the 800W moving head. “It’s fast with smooth color mixing and has a great zoom range and good strobing functions as well. All these features are critical when it comes to EDM festivals. It held up under harsh conditions with no failures.”

Used to highlight the geometry and shape of the Circuit Grounds truss design were Elation Colour Chorus 72 LED battens. “The output of these fixtures is intense!!!” Lieberman said of the 6-ft long LED strips that each house 288x 3W RGBA LEDs. “When it was time to run over the audience like a freight train this fixture had the power to do so.” Built with a rugged die-cast aluminum exterior, the Colour Chorus 72 is just one in a series of four Colour Chorus batten washes.

Also mounted among the Circuit Grounds truss elements were Elation Cuepix Blinder WW2™ white light blinders, high-impact blinders housing 100W 3,200K LEDs for high-density bursts of light that mimic the look of an incandescent source. Finally, to emphasize the truss elements in shades of warm color, Lieberman used compact Elation Opti Tri 30™ RGB PAR lights.

EDM and EDC represent the biggest wave in music today and with 2015’s EDC Orlando, EDC has again shown an extremely creative and professional level of production that is certain to keep electronic dance music fans coming through the gate.
