23.01.2017 | Back from the Flood. Pulpit Rock Church Refurb includes Elation Lighting

In October 2015, Pulpit Rock Church in Colorado Springs received extensive water damage due to several days of heavy rain that unfortunately fell during a re-roofing project. With almost every room damaged, including their main worship space, Pulpit Rock underwent a building renovation that included a house lighting upgrade to Elation Colour Pendant™ LED color-changing downlights.

The new design for the non-denominational church’s main sanctuary called for a warm, inviting atmosphere that allows everyone to worship however they feel comfortable. Design/build company SOA of Colorado Springs (secondopinionaudiollc.com) steered the church in the direction of the Colour Pendant fixtures, a dynamic lighting solution that replaced outdated fluorescent architectural fixtures.

“The project architect had spec'd white light LED pendant fixtures for the space to replace the fluorescent fixtures but we proposed the Colour Pendant’s as a color mixing alternative,” stated SOA Vice President Daryl Porter. “Being able to dim and color match the architectural lighting to the theatrical lighting provides them with the ability to create many ambient looks and ‘feels’ specifically tailored to differing events.”

Sixty Colour Pendants are suspended from a concrete ceiling structure in the space and used as a flexible house lighting solution that allows the church to create any mood or atmosphere they desire. Installed in October, the Colour Pendant’s have the versatility to be used as variable white lights for the main worship space or as full-color immersive wash lights when required, allowing them to be used for all church services and events, as well as school classes.

The Colour Pendant has proved a popular dynamic lighting upgrade to enhance the worship experience in houses of worship large and small across the U.S. It is an excellent color matching unit with a uniform flat-field output and its 36 long-life 3W RGBW LEDs provide enough brightness for high trim environments like Pulpit Rock’s large sanctuary. “The photometric data on the fixture was suitable to the space,” Porter states, adding, “And they include wireless DMX which was a great labor saver on this project due to the concrete structure that made additional cabling/conduit runs problematic.” The Colour Pendant’s advantage as an LED-based luminaire includes reduced maintenance and savings on electricity while convection cooling and a lack of fans means it is ideal for noise sensitive environments like houses of worship.

SOA worked with Jay Cid of Elation rep firm PSLP (Professional Sound and Lighting Products) on the project. “We have had a great relationship with PSLP for many years and their willingness to provide demo equipment really helped to seal the deal with the church,” Porter commented. “Jay Cid is a rock star!” SOA also thanks Nick Thacker, Worship Arts Director for the church, who made the final decision to go with the Elation Colour Pendants. “He is an educated client who has been a pleasure to work with. Jacque Fabey was the Interior Designer who also served as the Project Manager representing the church. I can’t speak highly enough about these people,” Porter concludes.
